Art History - Appreciation of Humanities
Art has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as Art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms. What makes some works of art better than others? How can you tell good art from bad art? Is there really such a thing? Should art be pleasing to the eye? Can art be ugly? Why would an artist make an ugly work of art? Should artists imitate what they see? In what ways does art represent the world?

Thread in the Loom by Niyi Osundare - Humanities IV
Literature, at its best, goes beyond ordinary story-telling. It may grapple with small or big issues, but good literature should always provide enlightenment and insight. Beyond its entertainment value, literature can also be a liberator of the mind and, thus, create pathways for progress. As a result, boundaries are ignored and place and time are transcended. It can affect all spheres of life including areas of economy and marketing, political and social systems, institutions, values, and the daily activities of individual people. The picture of globalization is depicted. Nations are pressed into one commercially homogeneous global network. The challenge for literature in Africa or elsewhere is coming to terms with the continent’s heritage in slavery and colonialism. After reading Niyi Osundare’s essays and poetry, discuss “the global village” during the 20th and 21st century.
Mexico: A Traveler's Literary Companion by C. M. Mayo - Humanities I
Mexico: A Traveler’s Literary Companion provides a portrait of Mexico as perceived by the finest literary writers. They depict their experiences, capturing the imagination of different places. Discuss the image of Mexico in the writings. Are the authors repeating each other by reinforcing images and ideas that are known in America? Or do they depict the complexity of a country from different vistas including sociological and geographical views? Explain your answer.
